Supporting Families in Rebuilding Safe, Trusting Relationships.
When a parent and child have been separated—due to divorce, family conflict, court orders, or other difficult circumstances—reunification therapy offers a path toward healing, reconnection, and restored relationships.
At Tri Synergy Counseling, we offer structured, compassionate reunification therapy services designed to support children and families through the emotional process of reconnecting. Whether this process is court-directed or parent-initiated, our approach centers on the emotional well-being of the child while guiding parents in building healthy, safe, and secure bonds. We proudly serve the entire state of Tennessee through virtual sessions and offer in-person appointments for our local community. Our bilingual therapists offer compassionate care in both English and Spanish to meet the needs of our diverse community.
Who Is Reunification Therapy For?
Reunification therapy may be helpful when
- A parent has been estranged or separated from their child(ren) for a period of time.
- There have been high-conflict divorce or custody issues.
- The relationship between parent and child has been disrupted due to parental behaviors, misunderstandings, or emotional distance.
- The court has ordered or recommended reunification therapy.
- A safe and guided path is needed to help the child feel emotionally secure as the relationship is re-established.
Our Reunification Therapy Process
We follow a step-by-step structure designed to safeguard the child’s emotional well-being while equipping the reunifying parent with the guidance, skills, and understanding needed to foster a secure and meaningful connection. Through carefully structured sessions, we create a supportive environment where both parent and child can navigate this transition with confidence, emotional resilience, and a renewed sense of trust.
1. Initial Parent Sessions (2–3 Sessions)
The reunifying parent begins with 2–3 individual therapy sessions focused on:
- Clarifying reunification goals and readiness
- Learning how children may respond to reunification
- Building or refreshing foundational parenting skills
- Receiving emotional support and guidance for navigating the complex feelings that can arise during the reunification process
- Exploring how to support their child’s emotional needs during the process.
Ongoing Parent Support
After the initial sessions, the reunifying parent will participate in at least one individual parent session per month for continued support, skill-building, and check-ins as the process unfolds.
2. Individual Child Sessions
Each child will be offered an individual session prior to beginning parent-child work. These sessions allow time to:- Build rapport with the therapist in a neutral, supportive space
- Explore their comfort level and emotional needs
- Prepare for the upcoming reunification sessions in a developmentally appropriate way
Session length may vary depending on the child’s age, developmental stage, and emotional needs. Timeframes typically range from 30 to 90 minutes and are adjusted on a case-by-case basis—especially when working with multiple children and coordinating with the parent.
3. Parent-Child Reunification Sessions (Typically 45 Minutes Each)
Once both parent and child(ren) are ready, we move into joint therapy sessions designed to:
- Rebuild connection and trust at a pace appropriate for the child
- Foster positive interactions and communication
- Provide in-the-moment coaching and emotional support
Sessions typically run 45 minutes, but timing and structure are flexible and may vary based on:
- The number of children involved
- Each child’s developmental stage and emotional needs
- The pacing required for the family to feel safe and supported
Alternating Weekly Format for Siblings:
If there are multiple children, sessions are typically alternated weekly so each child has individual time with the reunifying parent, supporting the development of a strong one-on-one connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this therapy confidential?
While reunification therapy is not always fully confidential (especially if court involvement is present), we strive to create a respectful, safe space for honest emotions and growth. We do not provide custody evaluations or legal recommendations.
Can both parents participate?
Typically, sessions begin with the reunifying parent only. In some cases, co-parenting support or separate parent consultations may be recommended as the process evolves.
How long does reunification therapy take?
Every family’s journey is different. Some cases may involve a few months of support, while others benefit from longer-term work depending on the depth of repair needed.
